Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge
This game is inspired by the iconic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animation and falls under the Beat ’em up genre (main goal: defeat waves of enemies). It’s a throwback to the 90s arcade machines often found in game halls that operated with coins. If you’ve tried those machines before, you’ll know they were designed to make you spend more money – you’d pay every time you ran out of lives to keep playing. Now, they’ve remastered it for home consoles, allowing you to play freely. The game just launched yesterday, is only 1GB in size, and is available for free on Game Pass.
Gameplay and Modes:
The game features two modes: a standard Story Mode and a classic Arcade Mode. In Arcade Mode, if you run out of lives, you’ll have to restart the story from the beginning, and there’s no save option for your progress. However, the game is relatively short, with 16 missions taking about 2 hours to complete, with each mission lasting around 7 minutes. You can play online or locally with up to 6 players, choosing between the four turtles, Splinter, or April. Playing with friends is definitely more enjoyable. Gameplay is straightforward – pick a character, move left, right, up, or down on the screen, and face waves of enemies. You defeat them by pressing a single attack button repeatedly.
Each character has a unique special move and slightly different playstyles – some are faster but weaker, while others are slower but stronger. One issue I faced is with the perspective, making it slightly challenging to align your character with enemies for accurate hits, often resulting in missed attacks. However, this can be overlooked since it’s a remaster of a 30-year-old game, and the original hardware didn’t allow for precise mechanics.
Audio:
The game features a mix of classic soundtracks and remixes of those tracks. These are energetic and perfectly match the nostalgic vibe of the game.
Graphics:
The graphics are simple 2D pixel art, similar to old Atari games, with characters made of small square pixels.
Conclusion:
This game offers a simple and classic experience that will appeal to fans of retro gaming, especially those who enjoyed playing on pre-1995 consoles. It has low system requirements and is highly recommended for a fun, nostalgic trip down memory lane.
