Explanation of Steam’s new game sharing system or Steam Family Share.
Steam’s New Game Sharing System
Steam’s Family Share system is still in beta and not yet officially available to everyone. To activate it, go to the Steam application settings on your PC (as shown in the image above). Then, follow these steps:
- Go to the Interface section.
- Select Client Beta Participation and choose Steam Family Beta.
- Restart the application.
Once it restarts, go back to the settings and navigate to the Family section. You’ll find options to either create your own family group or join one (if someone invites you, provided you’re friends on Steam).
Features of the Steam Family System
- A family group can include up to 6 accounts.
- Accounts can be categorized as either Adult (full access) or Child (limited permissions).
Previously, Steam’s sharing system allowed sharing your library with only one account at a time. If you were online, the other account couldn’t use your library until you finished and logged off.
What’s New?
- Now, all six accounts in a family can share their libraries simultaneously, as long as they’re not trying to play the same game at the same time.
- If you want to play a game that’s already being used by another family member, Steam will notify you that it’s unavailable until the other user stops playing.
- You can also play shared games offline, no need to stay online constantly.
For example, if you’ve received a game via offline sharing, just disconnect your internet and play comfortably. Reconnect when you’re done, and you won’t face any issues.
Save Files and Achievements
Each account in the family has separate save files and achievements. You can play games from your personal account as if you owned them directly.
What Happens If You Leave the Family?
- Any adult user in the family group can remove themselves or others from the group, including the person who created the family.
- If you leave or are removed, you can rejoin the same family if it still has space for new members (up to 6).
- If you want to join or create a new family, you must wait one year from the date you left or created the previous family.
Important Note
If any account in the family is banned for cheating in a game, all accounts in the family will also receive a ban. Be cautious when adding members to your family group.
Compatibility
The Family Sharing system works on any device with Steam installed, including Steam Deck, laptops, PCs, or handheld consoles running Windows.
