Our Honest Review of Payday 3: Is It Worth the Wait?

Payday 3 caught everyone by surprise. No leaks, no rumors—just a beta invite out of nowhere. As a huge fan of Payday 2 (with over 1000 hours of playtime), I was thrilled to see a new installment in this legendary franchise, especially after waiting a decade!

Payday 2 had a long life, with 20 updates ranging from new content to cosmetic upgrades. The developer, Starbreeze, really outdid themselves in terms of support. But let’s be honest, 10 years for a sequel to a non-massive game? It’s not GTA 6; 10 years is a stretch!

About the Game & the Developer

Starbreeze is a small, low-key studio that focuses solely on the Payday series. No flashy marketing or over-the-top promises here. In 2013, they launched Payday 2—a game focused on bank heists, armed robberies, and similar criminal activities. Think GTA V heists but as a first-person experience, without the driving, and more focused on shooting and execution.

Is Payday 3 Any Good?

Yes, absolutely! Even with just one map in the beta, the game feels promising. However, keep in mind that this is just a small preview—things could change with the final release.

Gameplay Highlights

The beta map is set in a New York bank. You start in “Masks Off” mode, blending in as a regular customer while scouting the layout. You can sneak into restricted areas to gather intel, but getting caught twice means you’re arrested. Stealth mechanics are simple but effective—you crouch, sneak behind guards, and steal access cards for locked doors.

If stealth fails, the game switches to “Masks On” mode. You pull out your weapons, and security calls the cops. Police arrive in waves, getting tougher each time. While the AI is fairly basic (they don’t take cover or dodge bullets), the combat feels satisfying, especially when coordinating with teammates.

Final Thoughts on the Beta

The full game will feature eight heists, each with unique objectives and tools to keep things fresh. For example, one heist involves stealing a painting from a museum, where you must identify the authentic piece before taking it. This variety should make the game even more enjoyable.

Upgrades, Graphics, and Final Verdict

You can spend your loot on weapons, masks, and other items to customize your playstyle. The game introduces new mechanics like silencers and gas grenades, making stealth approaches more viable. The graphics, powered by Unreal Engine 4 (with plans to upgrade to UE5), are impressive. Environmental damage adds an extra layer of immersion.

Payday 3 Environmental Damage

Overall, Payday 3 delivers an exciting experience, especially for fans of co-op games. While it’s not a groundbreaking leap, it’s a solid continuation of the franchise. Grab some friends, plan your heist, and get ready for some chaotic fun!
