Game Review
Lords of the Fallen
Lords of the Fallen is a souls-like RPG developed by Hexworks. Originally released in 2014, the first version was a standard souls-like experience. In 2023, the developers launched a reboot with a new story, mechanics, and characters set in the same universe but thousands of years later.
Story
The game tells the legend of a war between humans and the demon lord Adyr in the dark world of Mournstead. Adyr was defeated and exiled to another realm, with five beacons set up to keep him banished. These beacons were protected by the Hollowed Sentinels.
Over time, evil forces corrupted the Sentinels, extinguishing the beacons and paving the way for Adyr’s return. Players are tasked by the Lord of Light to cleanse the corruption and reignite the beacons, deciding the fate of the world.
Gameplay
Lords of the Fallen offers nine starting classes, each with unique looks and combat styles. As you progress, four additional classes unlock, allowing for replayability in New Game+ or on higher difficulties.
The game features two interconnected worlds: Axiom (the land of the living) and Umbral (the realm of the dead). Players can switch between them using the Lamp, a key item essential for solving puzzles, opening new paths, and defeating enemies.
Some boss fights feel too easy, and the AI occasionally behaves poorly, getting stuck or resetting awkwardly. However, the game remains a rewarding experience for souls-like fans.
Multiplayer
Multiplayer allows you to complete the game with a friend. Both players earn loot and XP, but only the host’s progress is saved. Be cautious, as save file corruption and lag issues are still unresolved.
Graphics & Performance
Built with Unreal Engine 5, the game boasts stunning visuals with intricate world design. However, performance issues like frame drops, crashes, and black screens are common, especially on mid-range systems and consoles like the Xbox Series S.
Despite performance hiccups, the game’s world and art direction are breathtaking, creating a visually immersive experience.
