The Epic Story of Diablo IV and Lilith
Many of us have seen the trailer for Diablo IV and wondered about the characters shown, especially the new antagonist. This time, things are very intriguing because, unlike previous games where we fought demonic evils from the Eternal War, this time we see the return of Lilith in the trailer. Who is she, and why is she different from any villain we’ve faced before?
Let’s find out:
Lilith appears to be the main antagonist in this game, but here’s the twist: she’s also the mother of humanity. What does that mean? Let me explain briefly about Lilith and the overarching story of Diablo.
In the Eternal War, an endless cosmic battle between angels and demons, Lilith, the daughter of Mephisto (one of the prime evils we fought in Diablo II), grew tired of the conflict. Viewing the war as hopeless, she fled with an angel named Inarius, along with followers from both sides, who were later known as the “Renegades.”
Together, Lilith and Inarius stole the Worldstone, a fragment of the first being to exist. With it, they created a new world called Sanctuary, which is essentially Earth. Lilith and Inarius had offspring with their renegade followers, creating a new race called the Nephalem. These children, born of angel and demon, were powerful beyond measure. Fun fact: the Nephalem are the characters we play in Diablo games.
The Renegades, however, saw the Nephalem as a threat due to their immense power. Some theories suggest that Lilith’s ultimate plan was to use the Nephalem to end the Eternal War. This didn’t sit well with Inarius, who initially opposed any form of warfare. He decided to weaken the Nephalem’s power. Lilith, enraged, fought him but lost. Inarius banished her to the Void, a realm beyond time and space. He then used the Worldstone to weaken the Nephalem over time, turning them into mortals – humans. Inarius declared himself a god, living far from the Eternal War while humans remained unaware of their origins.
Skipping ahead, a group of humans secretly formed a cult to summon Lilith back to Sanctuary. They succeeded, and Lilith returned in human form. She restored the Nephalem’s powers in some humans before being discovered by Inarius. He fought and imprisoned her again with even greater force. By then, the Nephalem reappeared during the events of the Diablo trilogy, fighting the demonic invasions of Sanctuary. Meanwhile, Mephisto avenged his daughter by killing Inarius during one of the invasions.
Now in Diablo IV, we are set to face Lilith again. Her goals this time are unknown, but as the mother of the Nephalem, her connection to the protagonists adds a unique twist.
Some Trivia:
1. Lilith’s name is inspired by a Mesopotamian demon associated with storms and disease.
2. Rathma, the firstborn Nephalem seen in the trailer, was also imprisoned by Inarius long ago.
