Deathloop Review

Games like *Thief*, *Deus Ex*, and *System Shock* have long disappeared but remain influential to generations of developers and players. Arkane Studios, creators of *Dishonored* and *Prey*, now bring us *Deathloop*, a masterpiece that embodies the immersive sim genre in a modern and innovative way. The best word to describe my experience? “Creative.”

Deathloop Gameplay

Story

*Deathloop* follows Colt Vahn, who is trapped on Blackreef Island in an endless one-day time loop. His only way to break the loop is to eliminate eight targets (Visionaries). Meanwhile, Julianna, a rival assassin, is determined to protect the loop at all costs.

The story starts cryptically, but as it unfolds, it becomes a well-crafted narrative filled with twists. While there are no traditional cutscenes, the story is revealed through environmental storytelling, audio logs, and character dialogues, providing a unique and engaging experience.

Deathloop Story

Gameplay

The gameplay centers around the time-loop mechanic. Arkane Studios has brilliantly designed a system where each area operates as a distinct zone, and time progresses only when moving between zones. This maintains the studio’s signature freedom while implementing the time-loop concept effectively.

While stealth is available, the focus is on creative gameplay using various weapons and abilities. Unfortunately, the game suffers from weak enemy AI and a lack of enemy variety, which can reduce the challenge and creativity in combat scenarios.

Weapons and Abilities

Arkane’s expertise shines in the design of weapons and abilities. Players can only take two abilities into each mission, which can feel restrictive. However, the abilities are diverse and creative, such as “Shift” for teleportation and “Nexus” that links enemies together so killing one eliminates the group.

The weapons are powerful, varied, and visually impressive. The sound design is exceptional, making every shot and environment feel immersive. Tools like hacking devices and explosive gadgets also add depth to gameplay.

Co-op Gameplay

*Deathloop* introduces a unique multiplayer aspect where players can take control of Julianna to invade another player’s loop. This mechanic adds tension and unpredictability, creating thrilling cat-and-mouse scenarios. It’s a standout feature that sets the game apart.

Technical Performance

On PC, *Deathloop* has faced performance issues, including frame drops and occasional crashes, even on high-end systems. The PlayStation 5 version performs significantly better. While technical flaws are a drawback, they don’t overshadow the game’s innovative mechanics and engaging content.

Arabic Localization

The game offers excellent Arabic localization, covering menus, dialogues, and even complex scientific terms. Players can enjoy the game fully in Arabic without missing any details.

Final Thoughts

*Deathloop* is a testament to Arkane Studios’ mastery of immersive sims. With its open-ended missions, innovative mechanics, and thrilling gameplay, it’s an addictive experience that leaves a lasting impression. It’s a strong contender for Game of the Year and a must-play for fans of *Dishonored* and *Prey*.

Final Score: 9/10

Cons:

  • Lack of enemy variety
  • Weak AI
  • Limitation of two abilities per mission

Pros:

  • Compelling story and unique plot
  • Excellent voice acting
  • Immersive music and licensed tracks
  • Outstanding environmental and weapon design
