Is PlayStation in need of Call of Duty?
Does PlayStation need Call of Duty?
To answer this question, let’s quickly mention four important points. ❤️
✅ Call of Duty brings more money to Sony and Microsoft than any exclusive. The fact is, both Sony and Microsoft take 30% of every sale made on the store. For example, if COD sells more than 10 million copies on PlayStation, Sony earns over $200 million annually from the game, not to mention the microtransactions and additional content. According to the report, Sony would lose $260 million every year without Call of Duty.
✅ The Call of Duty series has sold over 400 million copies, making it the best-selling game series. The second best-selling game is Super Mario with 390 million copies. In the second image, you’ll see that the best-selling game in December in the U.S. was Call of Duty Vanguard, followed by Halo Infinite, even though COD wasn’t great this year. In the third image, you’ll find that the best-selling game on PlayStation Store in 2021 was also Call of Duty Vanguard, along with two other COD games. So, even under poor conditions, it remains the number one in sales.
✅ Call of Duty Warzone reached 100 million players and generated $1.3 billion. Imagine if it were released on mobile or the Switch!?
✅ Call of Duty Mobile reached 300 million players and made $1 billion. For reference, Candy Crush has generated $7 billion so far.
📝 Conclusion: We’re talking about a huge name. No matter how people criticize COD, it’s still dominating sales. I think this time, Sony will be the one chasing Microsoft if Phil Spencer decides to make it exclusive, perhaps with an agreement that benefits both sides, like Game Pass on PlayStation or Sony exclusives on Xbox. Either way, it’s foolish for Sony to let COD not be available on its platform if it becomes an Xbox exclusive starting in 2024. Imagine the acquisition that hasn’t even happened yet cost Sony $20 billion in market value, its biggest loss since 2008. So, if the acquisition goes through and COD becomes Xbox exclusive, just think about what will happen. Anyone who says PlayStation doesn’t need Call of Duty is either fooling you or doesn’t understand anything. ✅
