Sifu Review: Crafting a True Video Game
Sifu Review: Crafting a True Video Game
Introduction
When I saw the trailer for Sifu, I knew I had to try it immediately. It gave me a nostalgic vibe, blending elements of Hack & Slash, Beat ’em up, and Rougelike games. Developed by Sloclap (known for Absolver in 2017), Sifu showcases the studio’s growth and refinement, delivering a polished and professional experience that far surpasses its predecessor.
Sifu’s Story
The story follows a group of five rebellious martial artists who attack a Chinese dojo, killing its master (the Sifu) in front of his young son. The boy survives and embarks on a journey of revenge, facing numerous challenges along the way.
Sifu is not just challenging—it’s brutal. Mistakes can cost you half your health bar, and death comes with consequences. Each death ages your character, and reaching age 70 is your last chance before restarting the level. This unique progression system is one of the game’s standout features.
Gameplay
Sifu focuses entirely on gameplay. While the combat mechanics are simple, the AI is highly intelligent, creating a balanced yet challenging experience. The game rewards precision and strategic thinking, especially during boss fights and encounters with tougher enemies.
Mastering the Game
Defense is critical in Sifu. While early levels may feel easy, the game quickly ramps up in difficulty. Each enemy and boss has unique attack patterns that require careful observation and planning. Mastering these patterns is key to survival and progression.
For instance, the boss in the second stage, “The Club,” is one of the most challenging and memorable encounters. To succeed, you must learn his moves and counter them effectively, as rushing in blindly will only lead to frustration.
