Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart – A Stunning Next-Gen Experience

I thought my sense of amazement with new video games had faded over time. Games like *GTA: Vice City* used to leave me in awe, but I believed those feelings wouldn’t return. However, *Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart* took me back to those days when every year brought major advancements in gaming. Rift Apart proves we haven’t reached the peak of gaming, delivering an experience that raises the bar once again. Let me explain why this game left me amazed.

Storyline

The story focuses on the two main characters of the series, Ratchet and Clank. This installment continues the narrative from previous games, specifically *Into the Nexus*. The series generally revolves around the duo saving the universe from various threats. This time, however, there’s a more personal touch, as Ratchet searches for his lost tribe. Clank builds a dimension-hopping device, but it gets stolen by the villain Nefarious. The story also introduces new characters like Rivet, a female Lombax from another dimension, who quickly becomes a standout. Rivet’s design and personality make her the star of the game, even overshadowing Ratchet himself.

Gameplay

The gameplay combines the series’ core elements: platforming, shooting, and puzzles. Although most levels are linear, two planets feature semi-open areas similar to *The Last of Us 2*. Side missions in these areas primarily consist of fetch quests but reward resources for upgrading weapons, making exploration worthwhile. Weapon variety remains a highlight, with around 20 creative options. My favorite, the Topiary Sprinkler, freezes enemies temporarily, while another weapon launches explosives that detonate multiple times. The PS5 controller’s adaptive triggers enhance the experience, adding distinct sensations for each weapon.

Next-Gen Features

Rift Apart takes full advantage of the PS5 hardware. The haptic feedback system delivers unique sensations for different environments, from walking on water to rocky terrain. Weapons feel distinct, and the immersion surpasses even *Returnal*. The game features mini-games, such as missions for the robotic spider Glitch, reminiscent of *Watch Dogs*’ drone segments.

Visuals and Sound

The visuals are breathtaking, rivaling CGI in animated films. The level of detail and the seamless transitions between dimensions showcase the PS5’s power. There are no loading screens, even during dimension shifts. Voice acting is excellent, and the Arabic localization is among the best I’ve encountered, making it a great choice for younger audiences.

Performance Modes

  • Fidelity Mode: 4K resolution with ray tracing at 30 FPS.
  • Performance Mode: Lower resolution with 60 FPS and no ray tracing.
  • Performance RT: A balance of ray tracing and 60 FPS with slightly reduced resolution.

Each mode offers a unique experience, letting players choose between visual fidelity and smoother performance.

Game Length and Value

The game takes about 15 hours to complete the main story and around 20 hours with side quests. While its $70 price may feel steep for some, the quality of the experience justifies the cost. Insomniac Games consistently delivers high-quality titles, and Rift Apart is no exception.

Conclusion

Rift Apart is the best next-gen experience so far, with stunning production values and a developer that knows exactly what they’re doing. Despite its relatively short length, it sets a new benchmark for gaming. Insomniac Games has proven once again that they are among the best in the industry, delivering a game that’s as engaging as it is beautiful. This is a must-play title for anyone seeking a high-quality adventure on the PS5.
