Review of Mafia Definitive Edition
Set during the Great Depression, Mafia Definitive Edition follows the story of Tommy Angelo, a struggling Italian cab driver in the crime-ridden city of Lost Heaven, inspired by 1930s Chicago. Tommy’s life changes when he helps members of the Salieri crime family escape danger. Realizing his ordinary life lacks meaning, Tommy seeks wealth, power, and belonging in the dangerous world of organized crime.
Mafia Definitive Edition perfectly recreates the feel of classic mob movies like “Goodfellas” and “The Godfather.” Unlike Mafia 3, the game stands out due to its strong characters, especially Tommy Angelo, Sam, and Paulie, whose clear motivations make their stories relatable.
The game introduces characters gradually. Tommy begins as a cab driver but feels drawn to the excitement and rewards of a criminal life. Supporting characters like Sarah (Tommy’s wife) are given more screen time, but there’s room for deeper development.
The gameplay strikes a balance between action and realism. Missions range from stealth operations and shootouts to high-speed chases and bank heists. The design and variety are reminiscent of “GTA V” and “Red Dead Redemption 2,” offering thrilling moments.
Shooting mechanics have been updated, now including cover-based combat similar to Mafia 3. Hand-to-hand combat is also improved with new animations for melee weapons. Driving has been made more realistic, matching the 1930s setting, and motorcycles are a welcome addition.
While the world is beautifully designed, the lack of meaningful side content is a drawback. Collectibles and cosmetic items exist but don’t fully utilize the immersive setting.
The soundtrack and voice acting are top-notch, enhancing the cinematic feel. Licensed 1930s music, coupled with updated sound effects and improved graphics, create an authentic and engaging atmosphere.
Pros:
+ Excellent character development + Diverse missions with memorable set-pieces + Stunning graphical improvements + Immersive city design + Strong voice acting and music + New features like motorcycles and driving skips
Cons:
– Limited weapon variety – Minimal side content – Outdated movement and shooting mechanics – Weak main villain development – Occasional technical glitches
