The game is named after Halo, an artificial ring-shaped planet. This megastructure was created by an ancient alien race called The Forerunners. Halo is habitable with water, oxygen, plants, and animals living on its inner side. However, it hides a great secret that plays a key role in the story.

The Hero: Master Chief

Master Chief is the iconic protagonist of Halo. A super-soldier from the Spartan program with the ID 117, he has saved humanity numerous times. He is wise, confident, and physically imposing, but his fame is limited to soldiers who know his courage and strength.

The Advanced AI: Cortana

Cortana is a highly advanced AI with near-human traits. She is an invaluable ally to Master Chief, helping him protect humanity. With her immense knowledge and abilities, Cortana can control any electronic system and holds humanity’s secrets.

The Forerunners

The Forerunners were a highly advanced alien race that once ruled the galaxy. They had the power to create planets and believed themselves superior to all other races. Their arrogance led to their downfall when they created the parasitic enemy known as The Flood.

The Flood

The Flood are parasitic creatures that infect and transform any living being into a mindless predator, spreading their infestation rapidly. They are controlled by a massive entity called Gravemind, a monstrous being resembling a giant octopus.

The Global Human Government

Humanity united under a single government called the United Nations Space Command (UNSC). They colonized several planets but faced rebellions, leading to the creation of the Spartan program. Spartans, like Master Chief, are genetically enhanced soldiers trained from childhood to be ultimate warriors.

The Covenant

The Covenant is a religious alliance of alien species that humanity fights throughout the series. Its primary members include:

• Elites: Warriors with advanced armor and energy swords.
• Brutes: Massive, powerful soldiers with heavy weapons.
• Prophets: Leaders and religious figures guiding the Covenant.
• Grunts: Small, weaker aliens often used as cannon fodder.

BCE and CE Eras

Halo’s timeline is divided into two eras: Before Common Era (BCE) and Common Era (CE). BCE covers ancient events, including the rise and fall of the Forerunners, while CE follows humanity’s rise and its encounters with the Covenant and The Flood.

In BCE, The Forerunners battled The Flood and created the Halo rings as superweapons to wipe out all life, halting The Flood’s spread. DNA of all species was preserved in these rings to restart life afterward. In CE, humanity re-emerges, leading to the events of the games.

Key Events

The story begins with the fall of humanity’s colony, Reach, to the Covenant. Master Chief escapes with Cortana, who holds humanity’s secrets, to the mysterious Halo ring. Here, they battle the Covenant and The Flood, discovering Halo’s true purpose as a galaxy-destroying weapon.

Master Chief, with Cortana’s help, destroys the Halo ring to prevent its activation, marking the start of a larger war for humanity’s survival.
